LORTAB INFO:

Lortab is the brand name for the combination of acetaminophen (Tylenol) and hydrocodone, and is prescribed for the treatment of moderate to moderately severe pain. The two ingredients work synergistically to control pain. This medication is one of many opiates (derivatives of opium) that have been developed to effectively manage pain, while minimizing unpleasant side effects.

When a nerve is injured, the body produces prostaglandins (hormone-like chemicals) that cause tissue swelling and amplify the electrical signal the brain interprets as pain. Acetaminophen temporarily stops the production of these prostaglandins. Simultaneously, the hydrocodone in Lortab binds to the brain’s pain receptors, reducing the emotional sensation of pain.

Hydrocodone is habit forming, so pharmacists caution patients not to take larger or more frequent dosages than prescribed. Those who abuse the drug aren’t all that concerned with following the pharmacist’s advice. For example, addicts may crush the Lortab tablets, snorting the resulting powder like cocaine, or dissolving it in water and injecting intravenously, like heroin. This enhances the euphoric effects, while at the same time increasing the risk for serious medical consequences, such as an overdose.

Side effects from Lortab use include:
- confusion (especially in older adults)
- drowsiness
- dry mouth
- nausea
- vomiting
- constipation
- lightheadedness
- decreased urination
- impaired breathing

When Lortab is used in higher doses, or through alternate routes of delivery (snorting or injecting), these symptoms can be serious, and can indicate the onset of potential life-threatening overdose. Emergency medical attention is needed if nausea, vomiting and/or respiratory distress are present.
